Steve Schwab

Sundt Construction, Inc. is pleased to welcome Steve Schwab to the team as a project director in the Civil Division. Based out of our Tempe office, Steve will be support business development efforts of infrastructure and civil projects. (Learn more here). Since Sundt believes that our people are the core of what we do, we wanted to get to know our latest addition. We recently spent a little time talking with Steve, and this is what we learned.

 What is it about Sundt that has led you to make your career here?

I wanted to be a part of Sundt’s culture of long-term planning and strategic thinking.

 What motivates you?

I’m motivated to solve problems in innovative ways. I try to generate creative solutions that others might not be able to see.

 How do you alleviate stress?

I laugh a lot, even when the pressure is on. I try to see the positive side of challenging situations.

 What is one thing few people know about you?

My wife and I serve as fosters for rescued Labrador Retrievers. If you are looking for a great dog, check out dlrrphoenix.org!

 Where in the world would you most like to visit?

I’d love to go on a Mediterranean or South Pacific cruise.

Chuck Salt

Sundt Construction, Inc. is pleased to welcome Chuck Salt to the team as an area manager. Based out of our Tempe office, Chuck will serve as an area manager with a focus on mission critical facilities and corporate office projects. (Learn more here). Since Sundt believes that our people are the core of what we do, we wanted to get to know our latest addition. We recently spent a little time talking with Chuck, and this is what we learned.

What’s your goal in your new position?

I hope to expand mission critical facilities projects to support Sundt’s growth goals for 2020.

 What motivates you?

The challenge of accomplishing something significant with my team.

If you could build anything, what would you build?

I’d love to build 100 data centers.

 If you weren’t in construction, what would you be doing?

I would be working with other parents of autistic children in some capacity.

 When not at work, how do you spend your time?

I spend my time with my kids, CJ (5) and Sarah (3), and enjoy hiking, biking, some golf, and keeping up with NASCAR and the Florida Gators.

How do you take your coffee?

With two creams!

 What’s your favorite place to dine?

Rudy’s in San Antonio, hands down.

 What’s one thing on your bucket list?

Visiting every NASCAR track in the world.

Mike Hoover

On Oct. 1, Mike Hoover and his colleague Eric Hedlund were promoted to serve the company as dual chief operating officers (more here). Mike began working for Sundt as a laborer after finishing high school in 1978. He also held intern positions with Sundt while attending the University of Arizona. He joined the company full-time in 1988 and has held a variety of positions since then including division manager, chief estimator, project manager, project superintendent and project engineer. In his new role, he oversees the company’s heavy civil, mining and industrial, concrete, masonry, and safety/quality groups. We recently asked Mike a few questions to learn more about who he is and what he cares about outside of his busy role at Sundt.

 What’s your favorite book or movie? I haven’t seen many movies lately, but one I did see that I really liked was “Gran Torino” by Clint Eastwood. My favorite books are the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child.

 What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I like spending time with my kids and playing golf. I also enjoy being at my cabin in the White Mountains, east of Phoenix.

 When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I played a lot of sports as a kid, but I always wanted to be a professional golfer.

 Who would you most like to meet? I would really like to meet Arnold Palmer, the golf pro. I really admire what he has done for the game of golf.

 What has kept you with Sundt all these years? Sundt’s a great company. My father worked here and I’ve always had a lot of pride in this company. We have a great reputation in the industry and we treat people fairly. It’s a great place to make a career in construction.

Based out of our Sacramento office, Smith will aid in project management efforts in California (learn more here). Since Sundt believes that our people are the core of what we do, we take a vested interest in each of our employees and wanted to get to know our latest addition. We recently spent a little time talking with Tyler, and this is what we learned.

What is it about Sundt that led you to want to start your career here? I chose Sundt for its reputation as one of the leading general contractors in the country. Additionally, I chose to begin my construction career here because of its rich history and the company’s efforts to invest in its employees.

If you weren’t in construction, what would you be doing?I would probably be working for a non-profit group as an advocate for children with special medical conditions.

When not at work, how do you spend your time? I like to spend time with family, friends and my girlfriend. I also enjoy watching football and baseball. I root for the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, as well as the Texas Longhorns.

What’s your favorite place to dine in Sacramento? I really like sushi, so Blue Nami in Roseville is probably my favorite place to eat.

Where in the world would you most like to visit? I would like to visit Australia and New Zealand, as well as Europe.

Who has inspired you most? My parents have inspired me the most because they never let me down and always pushed me to work hard and never give up.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? My mom always told me growing up that the word “can’t” is not part of my vocabulary. It was the best advice in that it gave me the mindset that I can achieve anything I put my mind to.

Eric Hedlund has been with Sundt for more than two decades, making him a prominent figure and well-known thought leader in the construction industry. On Oct. 1, he and his colleague Mike Hoover were promoted to serve the company as dual chief operating officers (more here). While we know a lot about Eric from a professional standpoint, we wanted to take a moment to get to know him better personally. So we asked our new COO a few questions, and here’s what we learned:

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I really liked basketball. I wanted to be on the Olympic basketball team!  But in terms of a career, when I graduated from high school, I didn’t even know what a career in engineering would be like. I used college to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I liked math and science, and engineering was a natural extension of those. However, as I worked on engineering internships in college, construction quickly became my passion.

What’s your favorite book?  My favorite books are the “Jack Ryan” books by Tom Clancy.

How do you like to spend your free time? Playing golf, reading and exercising.

If you could build anything, what would you build?  I would love to have been part of the movement of the London Bridge. I think that project would have been a lot of fun to work on. I also enjoy research labs; the ones we’ve built have been really fascinating for me. If I could build anything, I would want to be involved in a very technical research building that’s purpose is to do research for the betterment of mankind.  

Where in the world would you most like to visit?  Scandinavia, because my family roots  originate there.

What is it about Sundt that has led you to make your career here? The quality of the people and the philosophy of the company. It fits very well with my personal approach of being team-based and focused on the greater whole. Each individual benefits from making the whole team successful. That’s the defining element of the ‘Sundt Experience.’

Beyond the projects on the job site, Sundt works hard on a mix of projects that build relationships among its team members as well as joint-venture partners, subcontractors and people looking to launch or continue their construction careers with our company.

Recently, Sundt’s Talent Acquisition Department met with representatives from state, local, and non-profit agencies at our Phoenix office for an informational luncheon focused on diversity recruitment and hiring. For many years, Sundt has been sending out letters to agencies and organizations noting our diversity hiring goals; however, as a leader in diversity, we realized that we needed to take our initiatives to another level and make closer relationship-building-focused connections with the representatives of these constituencies. Networking meetings and luncheons like this one are among the many ways we work with agencies and organizations to support our efforts to recruit and hire greater numbers of women, veterans, African Americans and other minority candidates seeking jobs in the construction industry.

Among the attendees at this luncheon were Danny Meehan of DES Veterans’ Business Services; DJ Randal of Maximus; Tamara Floyd of OIC; Nina Lindsay of St. Joseph the Worker; Micah Peterson and Teddy McDaniel of the Greater Phoenix Urban League; Michelle Harrison of AWEE; Daniel Adonis of the Maricopa Skill Center.

Sundt Construction, Inc. has promoted long-time employees Mike Hoover and Eric Hedlund to serve as the company’s dual COOs, effective Oct. 1. Mike and Eric’s promotions split construction project management of Sundt’s operations between them, creating an optimized organizational structure in light of our growth and expansion to new markets.

Jeff Williamson

Rick Belanger

Sundt Construction, Inc. welcomes Rick Belanger and Jeff Williamson to the team.

The general contractor hired Jeff Williamson as senior vice president and manager of civil construction projects. In his role, Williamson will lead the heavy civil division to meet its expansion goals, both in terms of work portfolio and presence in new geographic areas.

This is not the first time that Williamson has been part of the Sundt team. In the early 1990s, he served the company for five years as project engineer and construction project manager, respectively. For the past 15 years, Williamson worked at Ames Construction leading Southwest operations. During his tenure, he helped Ames grow its annual volume from $28 million to $242 million.
